“Education must shape not only the intellect but also the character and faith of students, preparing them to become responsible leaders in society.”

A Shepherd, Scholar and Educator Most Rev. Joseph Kwaku Afrifah-Agyekum, DD, STD, is the Catholic Bishop of Koforidua, Pastor of St. George Catholic Cathedral, and Proprietor of Madonna School, Koforidua. Born on 22nd December, he was ordained a priest on 17th July 1983 and later obtained both a Licentiate and Doctorate in Sacred Liturgy from the Pontifical Athenaeum of St. Anselm in Rome, Italy. He was appointed Bishop of Koforidua in 2006 and currently serves as the Episcopal Chairman for Catholic Education in Ghana and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Catholic University of Ghana. A Deep Commitment to Catholic Education A passionate advocate for quality Catholic education, Bishop Afrifah-Agyekum has Madonna School deeply at heart. Having previously served as Local Manager of the school during his tenure as Administrator of St. George Cathedral, he maintains a close interest in its growth and development. He regularly meets with the Headmistress and Local Manager to review the progress of the school and to ensure that it remains a model institution for holistic Catholic education. Promoting Excellence and Integrity The Bishop is deeply committed to academic excellence, integrity, and the formation of young people. He strongly promotes discipline, hard work, and honesty, and firmly opposes all forms of examination malpractice. He believes that education should shape not only the intellect but also the character and faith of students, preparing them to become responsible leaders in society. Gratitude to the Founders & Vision Bishop Afrifah-Agyekum is profoundly grateful to the Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS), whose vision and dedication established Madonna School in 1966 for the then St. George Catholic Church, now St. George Catholic Cathedral. Through his leadership, guidance, and unwavering support, Bishop Afrifah-Agyekum continues to inspire the Madonna School community to pursue excellence in learning, character formation, and Christian values. His vision is for Madonna School to remain a distinguished centre of holistic Catholic education, producing graduates who are committed to service, integrity, and lifelong learning.

“May Madonna School continue to shine as a centre of excellence and integral human formation for generations yet unborn.”

Message from the Local Manager and Chaplain Madonna School, Koforidua, was established in 1966 by the Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS) for the then St. George Catholic Church, now St. George Catholic Cathedral. For six decades, the school has remained committed to the holistic formation of children through academic excellence, discipline, moral values, and faith in God. As we journey toward the grand climax of our 60th Anniversary celebrations in November this year, we give thanks to Almighty God for His abundant blessings and guidance throughout the years. We are deeply grateful to the Proprietor, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum: the Bishop and Parish Priest of the Cathedral Parish, whose vision and leadership continue to sustain the mission of the school. We equally appreciate the dedicated support of the Board of Governors, staff, parents, and all stakeholders whose sacrifices have contributed immensely to the growth and success of Madonna School. Special Appreciation & Legacy Projects I wish to express my special and profound appreciation to the Madonna Old Students Association (MOSA), under the leadership of Dr. Henry Larbi, for their remarkable commitment and support toward the Anniversary celebrations and the development of the school. We are especially grateful to Nana Owiredu Wadie I, Kwahu Nkwatia Nkɔsoɔhene, for the construction of the 60th Anniversary Legacy Project — a modern classroom complex for the Junior Secondary Section — and to Nana Kwaku Boateng III, Paramount Chief of the New Juaben Traditional Area, for his generous promise of a school bus. MOSA’s additional support toward the provision of another bus and other projects is deeply appreciated. May Madonna School continue to shine as a centre of excellence and integral human formation for generations yet unborn.
